Challenging current thinking in ecological research

Rethinking Ecology is a new journal that provides a platform for publication of Perspectives, Rapid Communications and Responses with a strong emphasis on novel and bold ideas.

By publishing new ideas in all areas of ecology prior to their full experimental testing, the journal enables authors to discuss their ideas freely without the fear of being scooped. We believe this model has the potential to lead to new collaborations, the refinement of the original idea, and access to funding to accelerate the testing of new ideas in ecology.

Background and motivation

In most ecology journals, perspective and opinion papers are commissioned and/or reserved to well established and highly regarded scientists. Rethinking Ecology recognizes that novel ideas do not arise from direct invitations, are not the exclusive privilege of already renowned scientists. We want to provide a platform for forward thinking and publication of novel ideas that is opened to all contributors. The journal puts every author on an equal footing and offers a double blind review system to avoid any bias and enable authors to publish their best ideas and perspectives, regardless of their seniority, their publication track record, the aims at spreading the work about research published in Rethinking Ecology and attract as many submissions as possible. To help with this, we are also waiving all publication fees for manuscripts submitted in 2017.
