Perspective papers published in Rethinking Ecology must propose a new idea or hypothesis. This can relate to the definition of new terms or the refining/modification of existing terminology. For example, in a new perspective paper published last week, Buettel et al. (2017) emphasise the need to include measurements of dead and fallen trees in the definition of ‘forest’ to incorporate dynamic long term processes that can otherwise be overlooked.
